Thailand in Norwich - Giggling Squid

Having been to Thailand recently we decided to go to a Thai restaurant to reminisce. Giggling Squid (Tombland) was our target this afternoon.

Décor/Atmosphere

Upon entering the restaurant we felt a strong Thai ambience as if we were in Krabi. There was a lot of greenery around the place, and a bicycle at the entrance to really give that Thai feel.

Service

Once sitting down, the first thing I asked was what items were halal. They confirmed the Chicken and the Lamb dishes are all halal. At the time we went they had the lunch menu on offer which had set tapas items. Due to our restrictions they said that we can swap some of the tapas item for halal options.

Food

Our group decided to go for a variety of dishes so that we can try various items.

Chicken/Lamb Massaman Curry

This is the signature dish for Thailand - a fragrant and filling southern Thai dish with peanuts and potatoes (served with Jasmine rice). The lamb version was a lot better as the meat was tender. A saucy and creamy dish – delicious.

Chicken Pad Thai

Another popular dish associated with Thailand. This consisted of Chicken stir-fried with noodles. This was tasty. I feared it would be too greasy but it was just right.

Chicken Satay

Marinated chicken pieces served on skewers. This was very tasty and a popular dish enjoyed by all.

Thai Style Fish Cakes

Fish cakes cooked with Thai red curry flavouring. These were good albeit a little chewy.

Spring Rolls

We asked for vegetarian versions of these. These were standard – nothing special.

Salt & pepper Squid

Squid deep fried in batter. The group enjoyed these however it was a bit crispy - maybe a little too much batter.

Price

Going at lunch time you can spend between £10-15 each depending on what extras you get. The evening menu is pricier but the portions are bigger – looking about £20 each. However this is standard for Thai restaurants. The restaurant has a policy to add service charge to your bill.

Conclusion

The meal was very good. The service and atmosphere was nice. The food was tasty. They do sell pork and alcohol which could deter some. I will definitely return.
