Me and my mates fancied something different tonight. Nanna Mexico located next to Primark was suggested. I’ve walked past it many times but never really caught my eye to go in.

Décor/Atmosphere

The outside is fairly inviting. Once inside you can see it is an open kitchen. It felt like a fast food restaurant than a proper Mexican restaurant. The restaurant was quite dimmed which I wasn’t really a big fan of. The walls are illustrated with cartoons with various Mexican words.

Décor verdict 7/10

Service

I contacted the restaurant to find out what items were halal. They confirmed the lamb and chicken dishes were halal. This basically meant any dish can be purchased but the fillings are either Lamb or chicken. The style of service was a Subway system, whereby you order your dish and modify at each stage and then pay at the end.

Service verdict 7/10

Food

Lamb Quesadilla

Lamb and melted cheese in a giant tortilla wrap. These were served with mild or spicy sauce - we opted to try both. The quesadilla was nice. The lamb had good texture and it complimented the cheese well in this dish. The spicy sauce is very empowering so I’d stick with the mild one.

Chicken Nachos

Tortilla chips served with cheese, beans and chicken. I’ve had nachos before so I knew what to expect. However from a Mexican restaurant I expected better. The dish did not look appealing and the chicken was very dry. It just felt like they dumped anything and everything on it like a mess.

Lamb Burrito

Tortilla stuffed with with rice, beans and sauces, and your chosen filling. You may recall my previous review of the burritos and how I was disappointed. Unfortunately Nanna Mexico didn’t do any better. The filling was cold and tasteless. The burrito fell apart as soon as you picked it up.

Chicken tacos

These are tacos/soft corn tortillas stuffed with salad, sauce and your chosen filling. The chicken was chewy and dry which I expected after having the nachos. The tacos in fact fell apart as soon as I picked it up and became messy.

Food verdict 4/10

Price

Nanna Mexico is priced quite well. They have several offers and a loyalty app. Between 3 of us, we had 4 dishes and 3 drinks for less than £30.

Price verdict 8/10

Conclusion

For a restaurant that specialises in Mexican food I was highly disappointed by the quality of the food. For the tortillas to fall apart and some parts of the food to be cold I was shocked by this experience. Sorry Nanna Mexico – you need to do better.

Final verdict 4.5/10
